Do You Love PKU Camp? So Do We. Help Us Keep It Going
When asked what MAPKUF and its activities have meant to her, Emeline Schweitzer, a 14-year-old thriving with PKU that has been attending MAPKUF events since she was 9 months old, said, “It lets people with PKU know that they are not alone. Most of the year I am the weird kid that drinks a yellow drink super-fast and takes lots of pills. Camp Huber lets me just be me, no judgments made. I get to spend time with kids my age, joking about the weird things people say about our diet, or whose parents are the most annoying about drinking our formula.”
About MAPKUF and Camp Huber
The Maryland Alliance of PKU Families was started in 1994 by parents of children that have PKU to promote the health and well-being of persons with PKU. The inaugural event, Camp Huber for people with PKU and their families/support persons, combined educational experiences with networking and entertainment, where PKU food was on the menu and no explanations of diet were needed.
Over the years, MAPKUF expanded their goals and reach, now hosting several events throughout the year, and engaging about 100 people from across the Mid-Atlantic (and sometimes further). MAPKUF works to make camp, and the other events, affordable to all families that already struggle with high costs of insurance, medical food, formula, and medication, to ensure they are part of the MAPKUF community.
Your Help Is Needed
Each year, MAPKUF needs to raise at least $20,000 to cover the costs of camp, including providing full scholarships to 10 families, and requesting a low-cost donation from all other campers. Camp Huber 2023 will be a 2-day overnight camp experience for our PKU children and a family camp on Saturday. We need your help to support our mission and continue to have this great camp.
Goal
By April 1st, 2023, we will raise the $20,000 needed for Camp Huber through fundraisers, grants, and sponsorship.
